In 2023, Afghanistan continues to experience one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world, with 28 million people in need out of a population of 40 million, roughly 70% of the population, including 6 million directly threatened by famine, around 18% of the population.
According to a count conducted on April 13, 2023, by the OCHA Office, the humanitarian intervention plan for Afghanistan in 2023 is among the least funded in the world. Out of the $4.6 billion requested in the funding appeal, only $251 million has been received, which is just over 5.4% of the total required funding.
A report indicates that the lack of funding is forcing humanitarian agencies to reduce vital aid to millions of people at a time when assistance should be strengthened. For example, on March 20, 2023, the World Food Programme announced that with current funding levels, it could only provide crucial food assistance to 3 million people out of the 13 million planned for April. This means that approximately nine million vulnerable and hungry Afghans will not receive food assistance.
The number of people threatened by famine is one of the highest in the world. On the ground, the number of people threatened by famine is currently "one of the highest in the world." According to the UN, levels of moderate acute malnutrition are also the highest ever recorded in the country, and it is estimated that four million children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers will suffer from acute malnutrition this year.
Increased famine with the Herat Earthquake
On Saturday, October 7, 2023, around 11 am, an earthquake measuring 6.3 magnitude and eight strong aftershocks shook western Afghanistan in the provinces of Herat. Some of the hardest-hit areas are about 40 kilometers from the city of Herat, considered the cultural jewel of the country. This earthquake is the deadliest to hit Afghanistan in recent years.
The provisional death toll: Another earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck the region again on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. Its epicenter was located 29 kilometers north of the city of Herat. 1,384 people, including 759 women and 625 men, are reported to have been killed in the first two earthquakes, with around 2,000 people injured. 90% of those killed are children and women. Over 3,000 houses have been partially or totally damaged or destroyed.
Another earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude occurred on October 15, 2023, in the regions of Rabat-e-Sangai, Zinda Jan, and Gulran in the province of Herat. The earthquake was also felt in the city of Herat. Initial reports indicate one person killed and 50 injured, and the extent of the damage is incalculable.
INCREASING NUMBER OF ORPHANS
